The story behind the Ybarra name.
Ybarra is a Basque surname from the Basque Country in northern Spain. It is derived from the Basque word “ibar” (or “ybar” in older spelling), which means “valley” or “meadow.” The “a” at the end is a definite article in Basque, so “Ybarra” essentially means “the valley.”  The name is one of many Basque surnames that reference geographical features.  It is also spelled as “Ibarra” which is the more modern Spanish spelling convention of using “I” instead of “Y.”

The Ybarra family is actually quite prominent in Basque history—there’s a well-known industrial dynasty with this surname that founded various businesses in the Bilbao area.
