"Cruz was always known as 'Indio.' Apparently when he was young he would roam the hills above Shafter. When my great-grandfather Atilano would visit he would ask my grandmother Anita where Cruz was. She would point to the hills, and there was my uncle hiking the hills he loved. Atilano would say, 'Miralo; parece Indio de la Sierra Madre.' It stuck; and from then on he was known as 'Indio.'"

"After the silver mines in Shafter were mined out, many families from the Presidio area moved to Southeastern New Mexico to mine potash in the Carlsbad and Loving, New Mexico area. Some of the surnames of these families were Navarette, Armendarez, Lujan, Garza, Dutchover, Franco, and many more.
It's interesting to read the obituary from the Carlsbad Current Argus, which I do, and realize that many of today’s families in this area probably knew each other back in Texas."

In family search I had focused on Domingo my grandfather. In fact our surname Franco is from his mother Cleofas.
I had a piece of information for many years on her border crossing. She had listed a Tomas Perez as her nephew. I knew nothing of her mother's maiden name. So I searched Perez and Tomas. Bingo! Family Search immediately hooked me up with close family or of interest.
Ultimately our line comes from Barcelona, Spain. I have mulled over this for month making sure of lineage. I'm 99% sure. If you have other information let me know.
