Los Barandales del Puente
The bridge railings
music of Old Terlingua

Picture
This ballad used to be sung by Santiago Hinojos when he would serenade his future wife Sofía Hernández.  Click here to see this World War II purple heart hero's family page .

Below is a transcript of what he says and the lyrics he sings.  On the left is what he says in Spanish and on the right is a translation into English.
[Santiago platicando]

[Spoken by Santiago]
That song is from when I would go sing to my girlfirend, Sofía, at her ho... at a place near her house because I was afraid of her father.  I would take some boys who were singers, the Muñoz, two guys.  I would go ask permission so they would loan them to me and I had to take them back when we returned home; and, well, they accompany me on this song.

[Sung by Santiago]
The bridge railings
shake as I go by
hug me my dear [literally "swarthy one"]

[Aside spoken by Santiago]
"There was a bridge there just before her house."

[Sung by Santiago]
Hug me my dear so I can return to the trolley
'cause the cold snow is falling.
What was falling has fallen; look out your window
'cause the cold snow is falling.

Hug me my dear so I can return to the trolley
'cause the cold snow is falling.
I love only you; I ignore all the others
hug me my dear.

Hug me my dear so I can return to the trolley
'cause the cold snow is falling.

This song was popular in Old Terlingua.  Here are some links to versions of this song by singers that were popular in Old Terlingua.
