August 25, 2015 - Update from La Kiva
"It has been a long time since I posted an update and I have been waiting until I had something of importance to say. It seemed for a long time that I was simply posting to tell you all what had gone wrong or was delayed or what new disaster had befallen us. I am delighted to say that I not only have no bad news but I have some good news. La Kiva opened for the Viva Terlingua music festival running from August 20th through the 23rd. We enjoyed four days of fabulous music that was an absolute delight. During the festival we met an amazing number of well wishers. Thank you all."

I was working at Earth and Fire Gallery in Terlingua Ghostown yesterday afternoon
when a little storm blew in.
And then blew up with hard rain, high winds and hail!
After I took this Video, the winds shifted and came back at us from the east even stronger.
Two power poles snapped and Study Butte/Terlingua was without power for 19 hours.
Several roofs blew off including the old jailhouse/restroom at the Starlight.
Strangest spring ever!

And, from the South Side of the Border . . . 60's Music in Spanish!
May 9, 2015 Voices From Both Sides
From the original idea guy, Jeff Haislip:
"OMG, what a great community I live in. While most of the world is worried about securing their borders. We are trying to go back to the open borders that we had prior to 9/11. Our project, Voices From Both Sides-FB,.com, started a little over 3 years ago. An idea that music and art could possibly open our border or at least change the way that we are allowed to communicate with each other as folks who live on both sides of the Rio Grande which the Mexicans call Rio Bravo. The Fiesta Protesta started as a way for us to get together and show the world that (at that time) 11 years was long enough to be divided. We share music & food & splash in the water and have fun. We pray for the future, we long for the past. 3 years into it and this past May 9 was the biggest & best one yet. I wrote the song Fiesta Protesta 3 weeks prior to the event on a trip to Mexico. I hope you enjoy the song. As you listen please consider that only the dead fish follow the stream.
We are all connected,"

April 14, 2015 Our spring rains continue.
And the wildflowers and cactus appreciate every tenth of an inch!
Our most beautiful spring in many many years! Here's a Rainbow without any rain!

Happy Easter from St. Ynez Chapel in the Ghostown!
March 1, 2015 Yes, we have Bluebonnets. But we have flaming Ocotillo too! And so much more!
This picture is from a trip down river road in Big Bend National Park Sunday. Oh, the skies. Oh. the GREEN! The park hasn't bloomed like this for 25 years! |
January 24, 2015 - Our Annual Terlingua Home Tour was a rousing success if you base your rating on the weather, or the unique homes we visited, or the comradere at the finish at Espresso Poco Mas. Though numbers were down, we raised over a thousand dollars to help our local theater group, Last Minute Low Budget, with their production account. We are looking forward to their spring play, 37 Postcards the last two weekends in March.

Sunday, January 11, 2015 - Just the other side of Big Bend National Park, Boquillas, Mexico has again become an easy place to visit. The border crossing officially reopened in the Spring of 2013, giving visitors the chance once more to ride a horse or a burro or a truck into town to wander, eat, listen to music, practice your Spanish and just be.
This particular Sunday morning we were privileged to go on a trial run of the new Boquillas Canoe Adventure. Paddling down the Rio Grande past Boquillas, we entered the mouth of Boquillas Canyon. Not a difficult paddle at all, it was fun to have a new way to see Boquillas. As we hiked back to the waiting trucks for the ride back to town, we visited a cave full of crystals and saw a gorgeous hot springs surrounded by bright green. You'll want to try this. You can arrange for parties of up to 12 at the crossing. Just ask for Victor. $65 per person, included lunch and the Boquillas Ferry ride!

New Year's Day Eve has become our time to celebrate. After Paul wins fourth place in the Black Eyed Pea CookOff (they only announce the first three, so he must have, right?), we have dinner with friends at the Starlight and then find a good spot to watch and listen to our musicians play their favorite Townes Van Zandt tunes. This year the Festivities were hosted by Butch Hancock. In the Finale you see above, he was joined by his son, Rory Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jalapeno Schwartz, Mark Lewis and Jimmie's son Colin Gilmore. Blew the roof off the Starlight for sure!
It's the tradition in Terlingua to start the year with good luck by traveling to the Porch in the Ghostown and sharing Black Eyed Peas with our neighbors. This being the 25th Annual, Pam Ware and Tommy Hancock finally broke that first year tie. Pam got 71 votes to Tommy's 40 and was declared overall winner.
Pam Ware reported to the Terlingua Moon:
Weather or not, we had a party New Year’s Day! The 25th Annual Blackeyed Pea Off went off despite the odds, complete with a little sunshine and a beautiful rainbow there at the end. This year’s winners were: 1st) Paula Osborne from Gulala, CA, and her partner Pat Hudspeth of Cheyenne, WY; 2nd) Stephanie Shiflit, newly of Terlingua; and 3rd) Herman Everett (last year’s winner), owner of the El Dorado Hotel and High Sierra Bar and Grill. There were 31 entries this year. Honorable Mention goes to David Tinsley (all 12 of you!). Close to $2,000 was raised for Last Minute Low Budget Productions, and what great helpers they were in pulling this off. Thank you to the musicians, too many to name here, but high energy music went all afternoon long. Special guest Tommy X Hancock and Pam Ware had their Tie-Off, with Pam winning 71-40.
A BIG shout out goes to the area hotels, restaurants, and outfitters for another successful “Hot Date Raffle.” And thank you, Deputy Patrick, for being a good sport and letting us arrest and throw you in the historic Terlingua Ghost Town Jail. Bail was met promptly and all got to start their new year off with good luck!
