Garcia has lived in the Big Bend for over thirty years, first in Big Bend National Park, then in Lajitas and Terlingua. She moved to Alpine in 2009. All of her novels and short stories are set against the majestic scenery of the Terlingua-Alpine-Fort Davis-Big Bend National Park area.

For fifteen years, Ms. Garcia owned and managed Big Bend River Tours out of Lajitas. A few years after she sold the company, she founded The Terlingua Youth Club which became a certified affiliation of The Boys & Girls Clubs of America at the start of 2006.

Here is what Jean Hardy-Pittman said in a review of the winning book last year: “A stunning debut by Big Bend resident Garcia has burst on the local book scene with dead-on aim. One of the best-selling mysteries in the history of our store, One Bloody Shirt at a Time introduces Brewster County Deputy Margarita Ricos, who draws the reader in to her innermost thoughts and feelings as she narrates the story. She’s pretty, she’s smart, she’s young, and she can handle a gun, a horse, and a bad, bad man.

The gorgeous desert-mountain settings in and around Terlingua add drama and beauty to the story, and fictional “real people” (the county judge, the sheriff) add fun for locals reading the book. There’s suspense, action, angst, intrigue, nasty-mean characters, and heroes, too. It’s a book that won’t let you go until you get to the last page. And then all you want is more!”

The Midland Reporter-Telegram’s Glen Aaron writes a column about West Texas authors. After reading One Bloody Shirt at a Time, he wrote, “The Tony Hillerman of Terlingua, Beth Garcia has written eight Deputy Ricos Tales and, like Hillerman’s Navajo police officer, Jim Chee series, once you read one Deputy Ricos Tale, you’ll want more.”

He goes on to quote from the book: “I sighed and comforted myself with the breathtaking views in all directions, scenery that never failed me even when everything else did: hazy mountains with bare cliff faces of red-brown rock, boulder-strewn hills that appear to be gently rolling but are anything but gentle. In the Big Bend of Texas, nothing is as it appears. Bizarre shapes and show-off colors materialize as light floods the landscape. Things gleam for a while then darken, change shape, move, and eventually disappear as the sun cuts its path across the sky. By the time darkness settles, you wonder if the whole scene wasn’t just a trick of your imagination.”

All of Elizabeth A. Garcia’s novels can be purchased from Front Street Books and the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, from Terlingua Trading Company and the Cottonwood General Store in Terlingua, from the Barton Warnock Center and Red Rock Outfitters in Lajitas, at the gift shop in the Chisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park, and at the Limpia Hotel’s Gift Shop in Fort Davis, TX.  They are also available on Amazon.com.

Garcia will attend the awards banquet in Austin on June 21st and a book signing at Malvern Book Store in Austin on June 22nd. The author can be contacted through Facebook at ElizabethAGarciaAuthor or via email at [email protected] or at P. O. Box 1245, Alpine, TX 79831.
