In April 1940 H R Gard was 67 years old. He had been born in Ohio and was living in Alpine, Texas in a home (possibly on 6th Street) he rented for $30. He was working as a civil engineer in road construction. Living with him in a house he owned (home value estimated at $2,000) his 54 year old wife Anna, their 12 year old daughter Mary Ellen who had been born in New York, and a 32 year old divorced niece Virginia Abbott who was born in Illinois but had been living in Shumans Wisconsin before coming to alpine.

On April 7, 1950 Harry Gard age 77 was widowed and had a lodger, John Mitchell who was 33 years old and had come from Pecos, Texas the year before. Both of them worked for Brewster County as surveyors. His house was located on Highway 118 in Alpine, Texas.

Linda Reagan tells us in the Discussion page "Discuss Any Family" on a post made on April 14, 2010 that a member of the Gard family "was a manager of the mine at Terlingua in the 1940s. When the mines closed, they moved into Alpine and he built the 2 story white house across from the Catholic Church."

This is the Death Certificate and a document with the information from the death certificate for Harry R. Gard who was born in Springfield Ohio but lived in Brewster County since 1929. His father was Charles G. Gard. His mother was Louisa Lankinaw. Both of his parents were born in Springfield Ohio. His death certificate tells us he had been a county surveyor and never served in the military. He died about two weeks before his 82 birthday of malnutrition caused by "visceral complex" due to old age. His death was reported by A. J. Gard.
