I really enjoyed the story of Celestia. The entire documentation of her family is well done. --I am happy to report to you that my great grandfather Simón Lerma de Leon lived at Terlingua in 1905. My great uncle Frank was born there.
--I wish there was more I could do to preserve the heritage of the Big Bend area settlements. I can provide this information:p
Simón Lerma and Apolinar Peña arrived at El Polvo after the original first 5 families settled (abt. 1872). Both men are mentioned in Soltero Mata's book "Ojinaga en una loma." Peña owned farm land at Polvo. Apolinar Peña's daughter Petra married Samuel J. Hensley. Hensley had property there too.
Simon married Apolinar's daughter Victoria at Polvo in 1892. Simon and Victoria's oldest son Pantaleón Lerma (b. Polvo, 1892) is my grandfather.
From 1896-1904, the Lermas lived at Marathon, Boquillas, and Las Lajitas. My grandfather said that Apolinar Peña died at Lajitas. I'm not sure where he is buried. During the off season, the men worked the mines to supplement their income (my best guess).
Sometime in 1916-17 my grandfather was secretary for the water district at Polvo. His minutes are recorded in documents in the possession of Señor Rosendo Evaro.
The Lerma's eventually settled at Marfa in 1918, using 2 mules and wagon. My grandfather worked various jobs and was a US mail carrier for Redford, Shafter and the other communities.
Please consider the inclusion of my family in this website. Kind regards, Robert
