Please come to visit our vendors and see the exhibits if for no other reasons. We will be there Thursday to set up and we will be open Friday and Saturday.

In the early 1700s, the Spanish pioneers of San Antonio began documenting daily accounts of our community. They were meticulous about detailing the quotidian life, especially the legal activities of its citizens, giving us a window into life in the early days of San Antonio.
In the 120 years since BexarCounty sent a portion of the Spanish Archives to the University of Texas at Austin to be translated, relatively few portions of them have actually been translated. In San Antonio, after more than a century, local scholars, researchers and historians could have already completed these translations. It is clear UT cannot perform the task, and should return the archives to San Antonio.
A Sept. 14 Express-News editorial voiced concern over whether San Antonio has the facilities to store the documents.We've stored our treasures here for more than 200 years and the newly restored county courthouse has an abundance of space for researchers to have daily access to the documents.
It's doubtful that UT has invested millions of dollars to specifically maintain and translate these documents. They may have spent millions of dollars on the Briscoe Center, which also archives millions of other documents as well as housing faculty and staff offices, but not millions specifically on these documents. Otherwise, I suspect that the per-unit (document) cost must be exceedingly costly.
It is uncertain how much these documents are truly used in Austin. San Antonio is a recognized center for Spanish colonial and MexicanRepublic history, art and culture.
Colleges and universities here have scholars, researchers and programs specifically invested in the Spanish colonial period. Private groups such as Los Bexarenos Genealogical and Historical Society, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and others could make better use of these documents.
The consensus among worldwide institutions that house art, documents, photographs and other artifacts is to return them to the people to whom the patrimony belongs. We no longer live in a day when universities and conquering powers pillage the earth for treasures. Furthermore, many people in San Antonio are willing to embark on a capital campaign to ensure that funds are raised to preserve the documents in the county where they originated.
Today, the practice of retaining captured documents, art and artifacts is immoral. The portion of the San Antonio Spanish Archives in Austin belongs here with the other half of the existing documents.
CountyClerk Gerry Rickhoff is a hero for championing the cause of the San Antonio community and its people. What a travesty to rob a community and its people of their own history, identity and very being!

A Sept. 14 Express-News editorial voiced concern over whether San Antonio has the facilities to store the documents.We've stored our treasures here for more than 200 years and the newly restored county courthouse has an abundance of space for researchers to have daily access to the documents.
It's doubtful that UT has invested millions of dollars to specifically maintain and translate these documents. They may have spent millions of dollars on the Briscoe Center, which also archives millions of other documents as well as housing faculty and staff offices, but not millions specifically on these documents. Otherwise, I suspect that the per-unit (document) cost must be exceedingly costly.
It is uncertain how much these documents are truly used in Austin. San Antonio is a recognized center for Spanish colonial and MexicanRepublic history, art and culture.
Colleges and universities here have scholars, researchers and programs specifically invested in the Spanish colonial period. Private groups such as Los Bexarenos Genealogical and Historical Society, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and others could make better use of these documents.
The consensus among worldwide institutions that house art, documents, photographs and other artifacts is to return them to the people to whom the patrimony belongs. We no longer live in a day when universities and conquering powers pillage the earth for treasures. Furthermore, many people in San Antonio are willing to embark on a capital campaign to ensure that funds are raised to preserve the documents in the county where they originated.
Today, the practice of retaining captured documents, art and artifacts is immoral. The portion of the San Antonio Spanish Archives in Austin belongs here with the other half of the existing documents.
CountyClerk Gerry Rickhoff is a hero for championing the cause of the San Antonio community and its people. What a travesty to rob a community and its people of their own history, identity and very being!

He is also the author of "Paso de las Garza's Texas: Its History and Records."
