Antonio,

Your cousin Louisa Madrid passed along the information on your web site. What a great idea!

I have no family connections in the Terlingua area. However, I do have a deep interest in the people who lived there. I have been a long-time volunteer in Big Bend National Park and one of my jobs has been locating and documenting historic sites. I found that there were hundreds of home sites scattered around the area, but very little information on the people who lived there. So I have been researching census, birth, death, marriage, baptism records and anything else I can find for nearly 8 years and have come up with a lot of information. Louisa and I have had an ongoing exchange for several years and have shared a lot of information.

I had the opportunity to visit the Antonio Franco homesite along Terlingua Creek about 18 months ago. Louisa has a great photo of it when it was still occupied, with family members standing in front. It had two amazing adobe arches in front, perhaps the best examples in the immediate area. Unfortunately, it is starting to "show its age". Adobe does not last long when it is not being maintained.

I'll get some info organized to send to you and you can use it as you wish.

Regards,
Bob Wirt

Welcome, Bob! Luisa has mentioned you many times to me. She has a lot of respect for your work.

You are invited to share as much as you want with everyone else.

Having looked at some old census records myself a few years back I am aware how tedious and trying work that is. A good friend of mine, Sherry Wilson, in San Antonio showed me how to access census records that were found only in special files.

It was so difficult to cull meaningful info. So my hat is off to you for doing this for 8 years.

It would be great to link scanned copies of documents with the families on Familias. The best way to do this will evolve, but I have tried to do this with three documents Luisa sent me.

One way to do this is how I have shown my great grandparents' marriage license which Luisa sent me. When you click on the link you go to a page dedicated to the document.

When I did that with the obituaries I found this technique made it hard to read the documents. So I used a different method which uses a pop up of a larger version.

I have been overwhelmed with just a few documents because I spend so much time learning best ways to include, link, and show the information.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you would have. Also, if you want to take an active role up loading and including the documents yourself, I would love to see that happen.

I believe that Familias de Terlingua will work best if it doesn't have an editorial point of view or a single point of addition of information.

It would work best if anyone could add their info. At present the technology to do this is not in place. But I would love to share access with people willing to add to Familias.

Welcome, Bob!

Antonio,

When you figure out how to do it, I will be happy to make direct input to the websitze. In the meantimze, here is some information that you can include if you have time:

Pomposa Dominguez y Luis Baeza

I don't believe Marcelina Ybarra was a child of Pomposa and Luis. She does not appear as a family member in either the 1920 or 1930 census.

I don't have any record of a son Paz

Alberto was born 2 Jul 1886 in Texas. He died in Terlingua 29 Jul 1945 and is buried in Terlingua. He married Margrita Paz. They had daughter Dominga (no other info), son Tomas born 4 Sep 1909 in Terlingua. He was baptized in "Bigbend" Texas (Study Butte) by Padre Brocardus on 2 Nov 1909. He died in Midland Memorial Hospital 13 May 1997. (I have names of 8 children if you want them). Alberto also had a daughter Esperanza born in 1922.

Pomposa y Luis: Daughter Dominga born in Texas Jan 1888

Pomposa y Luis: Daughter Maria born 30 Mar 1890 in Redford, Texas. Her married name was Hernandez. She died 29 Mar 1968 in Midland Memorial Hospital and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Midland.

Pomposa y Luis: Daughter Josefa was born 14 Jan 1907 in Redford, TX. She married Felix Valunzuela on 14 Jan 1907 in Alpine by Padre Brocardus. They had 9 children (will provide later)

Pomposa y Luis: Son Juan was born 2 Mar 1904 in Polvo, Texas

Pomposa y Luis: Son Pablo was born Jun 1894 in Texas

Pomposa y Luis: Daughter Cristina was born circa 1898 in Texas. Birth year based on age reported in 1910 census.

Pomposa y Luis: Daughter Rafaela was born 24 Oct 1906 and was baptized in Terlingua by Padre Brocardus 13 Jan 1907. Godparents were Jose David and Remedias Luna.

I have tons of this type of info. Let me know the most efficient way to deal with it.

Have a great day!
Bob

Very impressed with the website. I hope that it proves to draw and document a plethora of history that heretofore had been relegated to within our family's histories as they are written and/or told. Chronicling my familias history in my book, Federico Villalba's Texas: A Mexican Pioneer's Life in the Big Bend, did not come without great criticism. One source was Felton Cochran, owner of Cactus Books in San Angelo, Texas who called me a "revisionist", labeling my work as an "historical novel", to which I injected my "own biased perspective" thereby insuating that family's oral history was contrived. It was my word against every historian that has NEVER WRITTEN an accurate account of our familia's historias. Contributors to this website are immensly important in memorializing and documenting their family's history as it should be, from the "Mexican perspective". My book was the first to offer true Mexican history of the Big Bend, let it not be the last.

Hi! I have copies of some "Franco" obituaries and other newspaper articles. If you like...I can scan them and email them to you. Send me a message. FYI....I am the daughter to Florentino Franco (of Terlingua) and Esperanza Blanco (originally of Ft. Stockton). Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, Ines. I remember you. I will get your email address and send you mine so we can upload your documents.

Please note that I have gotten such a high response that I am backlogged in getting the info on Familias de Terlingua.

I sometimes load "raw" data and then fix it later but you will find places where I got interrupted and pages are partially redone. But the information is at least available. I try to add comments usually in red to request clarifications or discussions.

This is a great site. So much information already.

I have some pictures that show mainly my grandfather, Simon Sr., around the family homesite. I have seen a couple pictures of family members standing in front of the house with the arches that Bob wrote about in the first post. I will try to find them and others to send to you.

Brett, I am glad you like the site. What would make it better would be to have your pictures on it. I will send you an email address where you can send any pictures you would like to share.

I know that your sister "Beca" has done a lot of work on family pictures in the past. Ask her if she would like to share any pictures, obituaries etc.

Thanks for visiting Familias de Terlingua.

In answer to the question "Was Transito Ybarra (referring to the obituary section) related to Alvino Ybarra?" The answer is YES

Transito B. Ybarra (obit) was the son of Transito G. Ybarra and Marcelina Baeza.
Transito G. Ybarra was the son of Victor Ybarra and Jesus Garcia.

Victor and Alvino were brothers. Their parents were Marcial Ybarra and Teodora Galindo. They had five children that I know of: Sons Victor, Alvino and Jose (all of whom lived in the Castolon area) and daughters Blaza and Petra (I don't know if the daughters came to the U.S. The sons came over between 1912-1914.

Marcial Ybarra and Teodora Galindo were married in Ojinaga 10 Nov 1866.
Marcial's parents were Francisco Ybarra and Bartola Galindo.

But, Alvino Ybarra was NOT the first postmaster at Castolon.

Hi Tony, Marco here from St. Mary's. Just wanted to add some info. Most of this is from the top of my head and I will have to ask my mom for the specifics.

To add to the family of Jose and Cleofas Ybarra,

Children:

Nacho, Natividad, Manuel, Marcial, Cleotilde, as mentioned above. I will try to get the names for the rest of the offspring whenever I go back to Fort Stockton.

Natividad Ybarra: Dec 25 1915 - Jan 6 2007, Married to Isabel Franco, Children: Nativad Jr. and Maria Concepcion (Connie)

Nat and Delva Ybarra Jr. : Doris, Jennifer, Nat III

Marcos and Connie Mendoza Jr: Marcos Mendoza III

I hope this will help on expanding the Ybarra section. I will also try to submit some photos we have of the family during the early 1900s sometime in December.

The Villalba family tree is incorrect as shown. The correct line of descendancy is as follows: Ramon Villalba Sr. married to Fernanda Jasso. Their sons were Ramon Villalba, Jr., Federico Villalba, Arcadio Villalba, Paz Villalba & daughter Librada Villalba de Rodriguez. Children of Federico and Maria Cortez de Villalba were sons Felipe, Jorge, Federico, Jr., Jacobo, Santos and daughter, Regina Villalba de Esquivel. More to come……

Tony, correction, I was not born in Terlingua. When my parents married,my
father was employed at the Rancho Ville
de la Cienega, between Terlingua and Alpine. The owners of the ranch were George Agustus Brown & Augusta Linn Brown. So that is where they lived. Later
they moved to Alpine, where I was born.
Augusta Brown was my baptismal godmother.

Years ago, I provided you with the Lerma family tree and you added the information to the Familias de Terlingua site. I thank you for doing so much work for my family. You folks put a lot of energy and time in developing the. It puts a smile on my face and gives me great satisfaction knowing that Terlingua has historical value for my family and the other families represented. The site shows the dedication by the Franco and Madrid.

My grandfather,as a boy, lived with his parents and siblings in Terlingua, Boquillas Texas, and Mexico from 1896-1906.My great grandfather workied at the mining camp. My grandfather went to grade school in Terlingua.
