Maria Isabel's story was interesting to me and it brought back my own memories of Leonardo Pando.

When I was a boy living in Alpine, I remember Leonardo Pando coming to visit us. I remember that my father seemed to like his cousin very much, so, of course, I liked him too. I found it exciting that he was still a cowboy! I have a dim memory of him bringing his horse over one time.

I also remember going to their house for a big feast. All the women were cooking in the kitchen, people bustling all over the house. It must have been a Thanksgiving.

All this was before I was of school age in the late 1940's. But I remember it fondly.

Maria Isabel, thank you for your story.

I have such fond memories of "El Primo Leonardo" which is what my parents called him. We would go to the ranch and visit the family and Maria Isabel would take me walking around the ranch and Leonardo would let me ride one of the horses not sure if it was "Happy" or not, but my he and my dad were close. He was a very distinguished man and I did not know he didn't have the opportunity to go to school. Can you imagine what he could have done because he was a very knowledgeable man and excellent cowboy! Thanks for sharing Isabel. I have some pictures of him I need to send you.

What wonderful memories you have. Thank you for sharing. My father also called him "el primo Leonardo." In 2005 I found a bedroll in my mother's home which I recognized and remembered from when I was a little boy and we lived in Alpine. I remember my dad showing the bedroll to Leonardo and a folding cot he had in a storage shed. I asked him what it was for and he said it was for when they were on the road with the mule trains. My dad by now worked as a carpenter in Alpine but he and Leonardo had been "on the road" and my dad was showing Leonardo the equipment he still had.

I did not know Leonardo very well at all, but my memories of him are very pleasant and fond.

I would like more information on the curandera Crucita, is her origin from the terlingua area or ojinaga? Is she still living? My family on my father's side is from terlingua, lajitas, chisos, therefore I am very interested in any information, updates, etc.

Maria Isabel, Thank you for your story. I been looking for my root in Texas. My mother was born in Alpine in 1933. Leonardo Pando and Anita Cadena were my mother godparents. Leonardo brother Carlos was also married to my grandfather Segundo Urias sister. Where is the ranch where your father work and where did he lived?

I am the grandson of Maria de la Luz Pando from that same area. My grandmother used to say " yo hasta fui boolegga " She too was good with horses and told us of ridding to Presidio to purchase tobacco for her father. She referred to their place in Chihuahua as el cajon Pandero verified by Valerio Pando in Redford Texas. She also spoke of the affect the revolution had on them. She did not have a formal education but could read write and express herself very well in front of whomever. Joe Portillo

I enjoyed Darla's poems. I'd typed in "writers of Terlingua," and then "poets in Terlingua," and this site came up. The poems really capture the place.
