"I would like to share a picture from my father's maternal lineage. It is a picture of my great grandmother 'La Teka' Eduarda Gándara. Our family called her 'La Teka' because she is from the Coahuilteka People.  They got her nickname 'la Teka' from the name of her tribe. Coahuilteka is what Nahuatl speakers who came through here called us, but in the language of our people we call ourselves Tahp'pilam - the people of the earth.

Our oral tradition teaches us that we came from inside the earth.  We were led by a deer out from under the ground at the sacred springs in what is now called San Marcos, Texas.

The stories of our people's beginnings on these lands defy the contrived logic that many outsiders have adopted as truth to this day. European science is just touching the tip of our iceberg of knowledge and history, their 'findings' say our Tahp'pilam people have been on our lands up to 19,000 years, but we know we have been here uncountable moons. We are the people! Do not let anyone steal your heritage and tell you otherwise! Thank you Dr. Mario Garza for this insight into my family history!"
