Simona Briceño Payanes who is the third girl from left in the photo shared this photo and its story with Louisa Franco Madrid. Simona died February 13, 2013 at the age of 102.

Simona told Louisa that she and her sister Nicha were playing with their neighbors Antonia and Matilde Rocha.  all four girls were having fun playing  barefoot.  Andres Rocha, who was Antonia's oldest brother and Matilde's father decided to take a photo of the girls playing barefoot.

When he told Simona and Nicha's mother, Juliana Briceño, that he was going to take a picture of the girls,  Juliana hurried and changed her girls clothes, put bows on their heads, and put shoes on their feet
so they would look nicer for the picture.   When Andres saw this, he
told her, "This is not what I wanted.  I wanted a picture of them having fun in their play clothes."

Simona says the reason she and her sister Nicha were staring to the side was that there was dog watching them. She said Andres, who was a photographer, set up a camera on a stand and then got under a hood to take the picture.  The picture was taken in Marathon Texas about 1915.

The information on this page was provided by Louisa Franco Madrid on February 4, 2014 from interviews she had done with Simona Payanes and other family members.  Simona was Louisa's mother, Natividad Franco's cousin.  Additional information was provided by Eulalio Rocha.  This page was created December 12, 2014 and updated December 14, 2014.
