John M. Southard married Preciliana Luján circa 1879

Their children:

2. Angelita White 1882-1949

3.  Daniel White 1883-1956

4. Librada White born circa 1888.

5. Noberta White 1892-1973

6. John White 1893-1970

Thomas White's Story
based on Bob Wirt's research and Antonio Franco's research in various Web entries that have not been verified and are subject to revision.
We ask our readers' help in adding to or correcting the following information.

John M. Southard was born October 7, 1844 in Rockcastle, Kentucky.  He joined Co B 4th Regiment Kentucky Mounted Infantry.  He was also a private in a Company of the 10th Regiment Kentucky Mounted Infantry.  He was a prisoner of war in Andersonville Prison.  He was just about to turn 20 years of age when he was discharged around Aug 1864.  He was disabled by a saber wound.

When he came to Texas he changed his name from John M. Southard to Thomas White.  According to the Terlingua postmaster C.O. Hawley, Thomas received mail in the name of Southard
and claimed it was a Civil War pension check.  The "Terlingua" Post Office at that time was at the Mariposa Mine site.

[Note: according to Bob Wirt's research, the name "Terlingua" was applied to the Mariposa Mine site at this time.  In 1909 or 1910 the name "Terlingua" moved to its current location at the Chisos Mine site.  Bob Wirt will be writing on his website, Life Before the Ruins,  about the various places where the name "Terlingua" has resided.]

John M. Southard married Preciliana Luján circa 1879.  He was living in Presidio County at "White's Ranch" in the 1880 US census with his  occupation shown as "stock raiser."  In 1900 he was in the Shafter area working as a general laborer.  He was in the Terlingua-Mariposa area sometime between 1900 and 1910 and died 9 Feb 1910.
1880 US Census
The 1880 US Census has a separate page (click button above to see it) for "The White Ranch." It shows four buildings on the ranch.  The first home listed, dwelling 14 household 14, is has 31 year old Thomas White and his new bride, 25 year old Preciliana Luján living by themselves.

While some of the information on this page is from Bob Wirt's reliable research, some is from Web search sources that we have not verified.  We provide the links so you can evaluate them for yourselves as to relevance and accuracy.  But more importantly, if you are one of these sources or know them, we would like to know if there is newer information since these posts were made.  Note that some of the clips refer to the "Waters" family.  William Mack Waters married Noberta White.  So some sources are descendants of  both Southard/White and Waters.

Al Gallego  (View posts) Posted: 18 Dec 1999 4:12PM Classification: Surnames: I am looking for information on John M. Southard. His tombstone in Terlingua, TX is marked with the inscription '47 KY ARTY' so I suspect that he may have been born around Kentucky. Date of birth is October 7, 1844. I quite could not make out date of death. Any information that you may have would be greatly appreciated.

I will check and see if this name matches to the people in Madison county, VA. Charles had 13 siblings and he lived in Texas for 10 years. If it does I will let you know.

There is a book about the Big Bend that says men were accepted at face value as to their backgrounds on the frontier. The postmaster in Big Bend said a man he knew named Tom White came in and asked for a pension check for John M Southard. He cashed it with no questions asked. Then volunteered he had changed his name when he came to Texas. There was a woman buried in Terlingua in 1927 named Oresliana Southard who would have been the same age to have been his wife. She was listed as a widow.
[FdT editor's note: the wife's name could have had the initial "P" read as "O."]
