Lori R It is Jesus Nazareno. The name San Santiago del Norte refers to the presidio. It was originally called "El Real Presidio del Señor Santiago de la Junta de los Rios," then "El Real Presidio de Santiago del Norte." Eventually it was shortened to El Presidio del Norte, which eventually became Ojinaga.

Toño Franco Thank you, Lori. What confuses me is that they usually separate the names of the locations from the names of the churches. So "en esta santa yglesia" must refer to the place and the church, right?

Lori R The church is Jesus Nazareno but they didn't refer to it by name. I don't know when they named it. Until then it was probably just "la santa iglesia." I have seen lots of records referring to the parish thos way- la santa yglesia (or parroquia) de (insert place here.)

Primo, it is now considered Santa iglesia de Jesus Nazarene de Ojinaga. Prior to Jesus Nazareno the church was formed part of santa Iglesia del presidio de Santiago.
Here is some it’s history I have found. The Church of Nuestro Padre Jesús de Nazareno has become a religious and tourist emblem of Ojinaga on the border with Presidio, Texas. Its construction is made of adobe and dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, around 1700, as part of the Presidio of Santiago del Norte built at the end of the 17th century by the Spanish. The tower was built in 1936.
